Numeracy Collaboration

Throughout the school year, our inquiry team has met with Richmond School District numeracy teacher consultants Shaheen Musani and Janice Novakowski. We have used the Numeracy Learning Progressions from the BC Curriculum as an anchor and a framework for developing student resiliency with numeracy (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/sites/curriculum.gov.bc.ca/files/pdf/learning-pathways/numeracy-quick-scales.pdf). We identified the specific facets of numeracy and the competencies that need to be developed in our students (e.g. flexible use of problem solving strategies, using estimation to assess reasonableness of a solution and communicating mathematical justification for solutions). We researched a variety of resources that could be used with students and shared many of these with our teaching staff during staff meetings (e.g. https://robertkaplinsky.com/ and https://estimation180.com/).
